The Right Steps To Help You Treat Turf Toe

Posted by Theo Williams in Health & Fitness

When the weight of the body is focused on one foot and the said foot is suddenly jammed into the ground or loses balance, a turf toe can happen. What is turf toe? It’s when the big toe gets sprained, since it naturally gets the most share of injury because it is larger than the other toes and bears more body weight. There are four essential steps to help you treat turf toe, and follow all of them to make sure your injured foot recovers completely and in good time.

Rest

An injured foot requires rest; not just bed rest, but abstinence from any activity that can make the injury worse. Turf toes are usually so painful that you really will find it hard to walk around, so do your foot a favor and rest for as long as you need to.

Ice

Since refusing to let your foot rest is the number one worst thing you can do, using heat therapy on a turf toe takes second place. Hot packs bring about quicker blood flow to the warmed area, and the last thing you want is more blood inflaming the poor big toe and bringing along with it more pain. Use ice packs instead to help the nerves in the foot relax, numbing down the signals of pain. Cold therapy can also keep blood from flooding to the turf toe, easing inflammation and swelling.

Compression

Compressing the turf toe with bandages, braces, splints and other items work two ways: to prevent more swelling and to protect the toe from further injury. A well-wrapped and compressed turf toe is far more protected than one left uncovered, easily getting stepped on or slammed into walls and doors. Some podiatrists and doctors believe that a turf toe can change how the big toe works for life, but by observing proper steps like protecting and compressing the toe, you can prevent clumsy healing that can lead to pain and poor balance for life.

Elevation

Keeping the injured foot elevated, where the turf toe is around or higher than chest level, is the easiest way to get fast and effective pain relief. You probably know that ballerinas and athletes like to keep their feet elevated when they feel tired, for this helps the blood flow back into the body in the correct path. Elevation also eases the heart, allowing it less burden to fight gravity and give better circulation through the feet and legs. You can elevate your foot while sleeping or relaxing by settling it against a pillow or two so that it is in an elevated height. The pillows provide gentle support even as your turf toe heals by itself.

Wholegrain breakfast helps fight colon cancer

Posted by Theo Williams in Health & Fitness

The rates of colon cancer around the world bear out the theory that healthy eating, wholegrain diets and diets rich in vegetables and fruits reduce bowel cancer. In developing countries where diets are still wholesome and often unrefined, the rates of colon cancer are lower than in developed countries, where we rely on refined versions of flour, bread, rice and pasta, and where our intakes of vegetables and fruits are on the low side. When people from Africa and Asia, where rates of bowel cancer are low, move to high-risk westernized countries, their risk of developing bowel cancer increases, which adds further weight to the whole idea. Clearly a strong environmental factor plays a role in bowel cancer, a factor which is commonly agreed to be diet.

While parts of our population are happy to chomp away on 100 per cent raw foods (fruitarians and very strict vegans, to mention a couple), most of us would, in reality, find it hard to turn back the clock and pretend we’d never tasted the delights produced by the modern food industry. So it’s fortunate that modern food science has made it possible to create attractive and appetizing wholegrain options, which as well as tickling our fancy, will do us good on the inside too.

Wholegrain breakfast cereals such as All-Bran Plus, All-Bran Bite Size, Fruit ‘n’ Fibre, Bran Flakes, Oat Flakes, Weetabix and Shredded Wheat, and 100 per cent wholemeal bread, muffins, fruit scones and pitta are all ways of improving the wholegrain fibre at breakfast time.

The role that wholegrain cereals, especially wheat, plus fruits and vegetables play in preventing bowel cancer may not end with their ability to bulk out the stools and increase the number of times we need to go to the loo. They may also help by supplying us with vital antioxidants and other substances that have anti-carcinogenic effects in the bowel.

Phytate, for example, which is found in the large intestine as a result of eating wholegrain cereals, can bind potentially carcinogenic materials and render them harmless. So too can flavonols and tannins found in the undigested parts of vegetables. One last advantage of a diet rich in wholegrain cereals, fruits and vegetables is highlighted by famous UK bowel specialist, Dr Kenneth Heaton, who once wrote that such diets will be rich in micronutrients and potassium and low in fat, sugar and sodium. Such a diet combines virtually all the internationally accepted guidelines to healthy eating.

What is a Personal Injury Contingency Fee and How is it Determined?

Posted by Theo Williams in Legal

A personal injury contingency fee is a common payment arrangement for personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits. The person filing suit does not have to pay the attorney unless and until a personal injury suit payment or settlement is received. Legal expenses such as expert witness fees and research may be charged to the client in addition to the personal injury contingency fee.

While these additional expenses are advanced to the client and deducted from the lawsuit payout at the end, not all attorneys are up front with their clients about the risk of these additional costs. If the contingency fee is 33% and additional expenses eat up another 7% of the settlement, the lawyer’s firm will take 40% up front before the client receives the rest.

Advantages of this system include:
* All injured parties can file suit, regardless of their ability to pay.
* If the case is lost, the injured party does not owe legal fees in addition to their medical costs.
* The person filing may agree to pay a percentage of the payout. If the court issues a small settlement, the victim still receives part of the money, instead of risking a legal bill that eats up the entire settlement.
* Attorneys who receive a percentage of the personal injury fee will work to ensure that a large settlement is reached instead of seeking to close the case quickly and move on to the next one.

Disadvantages of this system include:
* Lawyers can refuse to take personal injury cases that have a low chance of winning.
* Under this system, they often refuse to take cases that do not pay well.
* Lawyers tend to take their contingency fee before taxes. Clients if not their legal representatives must be careful to ensure that the settlement covers both personal injury contingency fees and taxes with enough left over to pay medical costs, living expenses and lost income.
* Attorneys who have lost a number of cases may decline to take other cases and charge hourly rates to other clients to ensure that their payroll is met.
* Settlement mills take claims and seek settlement quickly to collect the personal injury contingency fee. While they appear to be personal injury lawyers, they see their job as filing claims and take the first large sum offered to collect the fee. A good Toronto personal injury lawyer will seek the maximum allowed, not just settle to get payment quickly.
* Unscrupulous firms will refer victims to third parties to borrow money against the impending settlement to pay for medical costs, legal expenses and living expenses.

Factors that determine contingency fees:
* The law there are caps on what contingency fees a lawyer can charge. Depending on the jurisdiction, these fees may be capped at 40-50% of the awarded amount.
* The law firm Contingency fees will vary between law firms and sometimes even between legal professionals. Shop around. Ask questions. Firms with a higher success rate may offer lower fees. A few percentage points difference in contingency fees could result in thousands of dollars more that you can keep from the settlement.
* The type of lawsuit Automobile accident cases tend to charge rates around 33%. Medical product liability cases are more complex. Expert witnesses and medical examinations are required to make the claim. Multiple appeals and court appearances are necessary. In these cases, contingency fees in excess of 40% are not unknown.

Children & Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Posted by Theo Williams in Health

Did you know S.I.D.S. is the primary cause of infant deaths less than one year old? This year in the United States, around two-thousand five-hundred infants will fall victim to it. Although first we have to explain just what Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is. It’s the sudden death of a baby that is less than twelve months old. If your little one’s under four months old they are at an increased risk for it. Sadly even strong, healthy little ones can easily be victims of S.I.D.S. It generally takes place when they are asleep. For that reason, it is quite often called “crib death.” If there can be a positive, it will be that little ones do not display indicators of suffering because they usually are sleeping when it happens.

Who’s going to be at risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome? That question’s troublesome to reply to with the tiny amount of understanding we have relating to it. It is mainly once the other causes are already ruled out (including health problem) that doctors might declare it was the reason. We do know for sure that it affects baby boys more than baby girls. Drug use while the child’s being carried furthermore enhances the probability. Though the major thing’s whenever babies are permitted to rest on their stomachs.

Positioning a child on the stomach instead of their back has been shown to cause an increased possibility of S.I.D.S. A few concepts seek to explain this. The initial theory’s that tension placed on the jaw can make it more difficult to breathe in the air. An alternate one states that they’ll inhale air that they’ve just exhaled. They’ll for that reason have reduced breathable O2 levels due to CO2 they breathe. All this shows you shouldn’t let your child to sleep on their belly. The truth is the American Academy of Pediatrics has verified this back in 1992. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome declined fifty percent when they did that.

You might have the fright that should you put your baby on their backs they could choke on their spit or vomit. But the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that this isn’t so. Yet it is best to make certain that you try to avoid positioning them on their side since that will allow them to move to their bellies. And last but not least, they should be completely immunized too. Adhering to these guidelines gives your little one a better chance to not get Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The Signs and Symptoms of Male Yeast Infections

Posted by Theo Williams in Health

Yeast infections aren’t just something women get. Men can also have yeast infections. It may be a genital yeast infection or it could affect other parts of the body. Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of an ordinary yeast-like fungus growing in all humans. The most common of these microorganisms is candida albicans. There is a variety of unpleasant conditions that this little organism may cause if something triggers it to begin multiplying at an unusually high rate, resulting in candida overgrowth.

Some things that can cause candida albicans to overgrow are prolonged use of antibiotics, poor diet, a weakened immune system, diabetes, and several other instigators. Here are some of the symptoms you might experience if you have developed a male yeast infection.

Penile Yeast Infections

A penile yeast infection can be irritating and uncomfortable. You may see a white discharge from your penis, have a red, itchy rash on the tip of the penis, burning when urinating, or experience pain during intercourse. Jock itch is another symptom of yeast infection.

Symptoms of Other Yeast Infections

Yeast infections not associated with the genitals can present a conglomeration of symptoms, often making it difficult to diagnose the root cause as candida. These symptoms may include:

Digestive problems due to the overgrowth of candida upsetting the balance of the digestive system
Oral thrush, a condition where white patches appear on the tongue, mouth, or soft palette
      Bloating
Constipation, diarrhea, or alternating bouts of both
      Mood swings
      Unexplained fatigue and general malaise
      Recurring athlete’s foot
Unusual cravings for sweets or carbohydrates – Since candida albicans thrive on these foods, they are urging you to eat those types of products.
      Mental confusion
      Headaches
                 Skin rashes

A Simple Test for Yeast Infections

Because of the variety of symptoms, even doctors often have difficulty diagnosing yeast infections. One way you can diagnose the problem yourself is simple and free.

Place a glass of water on your nightstand before you go to bed. When you wake up in the morning, before you get out of bed, spit twice in the water. Observe the sputum for the next 15 minutes. If the saliva dissolves, you probably don’t have a yeast infection. On the other hand, if it becomes stringy, cloudy, takes on the appearance of spider webs, or just sinks in a blob to the bottom of the glass, it’s very probable you do have a yeast infection.

Yeast infections are not only uncomfortable, if left untreated they can worsen and cause serious health problem. If you think you have a yeast infection, seek treatment as soon as possible from a physician, by following the candida diet, or through natural herbal remedies.
