In many ways the Japan earthquake 2011 is but a distant memory. For us, since we have a girl of 17 months old, it gets us to thinking. What if there was a similar event here where we live? What if it happened in the middle of the night? Would we be prepared?
We don’t live in an earthquake zone, but a tornado or hurricane does race through from time to time. Just a few weeks ago we were huddled in the downstairs bedroom waiting for a tornado to pass. We need to have a way to protect us if something should happen in the middle of the night, or when we don’t have the television on to hear of any alerts.
The solution seems to be a radio that you can easily purchase from various retailers. It is basically a clock/radio, so you can use it to wake yourself up in the morning, or listen to a myriad of radio stations. What I really like about it is the fact that you can set it to be silent except for when an emergency weather alert is issued. With this advance notice you can then spring into action. My wife has already ordered one. What a great idea.
Another thing that is happening in our house is the issue of Katie and trains. She has a PBS special that she loves to watch. I don’t know why she has this fixation with trains…but she sure does. We were to a hobby store a few weeks ago in which they had a great display of Thomas The Train stuff (set up on a Thomas The Tank Engine Desk I do believe). We’ll have to take Katie there to see it one day.
