Magnify Your Water Sports Fun With Rash Vests

Posted by Theo Williams in Sports

Most people are very familiar with wetsuits.  These are the garments that are worn by scuba divers to help them hold in body heat while diving in frigid or cool waters.  They are made from a thick, insulating neoprene material that can be difficult to maneuver around in.  Not only that, but a wetsuit may actually be too much for those who are simply swimming or snorkeling around for fun.  For these people, a rash vest garment is probably a better choice.

Rash vests have a very different mission that wetsuits have, although they both look very similar.  Rash vests are made from a very thin and lightweight material called Lycra that is easy to move around in.  Rash vests, which are also known as rash guards or rashies, are skin tight garments that are intended to protect a person’s skin from both chafing and sun exposure.

Most people are surprised when they learn the original intent of rash vests.  They were originally created for those who enjoy the sport of surfing.  Because surfers always liked to keep a heavy coat of wax on their boards, sand would often stick to these boards.  This caused a lot of problems for the surfer when she would swim out to sea on her board.  Surfers would occasionally end up with some terrible rashes from lying on top of what amounted to sandpaper.  Rash vests were the solution since they created a barrier between the user and the board.

Surfers are no longer the only ones who use rash vests.  These garments are now used by many different water sports enthusiasts.  Rash vests are also not to be confused with tri suits, even though the two garments appear very much alike.  The tri suit, is a type of outfit that was designed to be used by those who participate in triathlons.

If you are the type of person who really enjoys participating in water sports, you should definitely give some though to purchasing your own rash vest to protect your skin from the elements.  Not only that, but you will look very stylish in your rash vest as well.
