All Types of Guide Dogs

Posted by Theo Williams in Animals

Guide dogs or seeing-eye dogs are professionally trained animals that assist the blind and visually impaired in mobility and navigation. These dogs come out of guide dog schools that provide the animals proper skill development like avoiding obstacles and following directions.

It is important to note however, that dogs are partially color blind, which means they can not be trusted with the interpretation of traffic lights and street signs. Knowing the way still relies with the human. The role of the dog is mainly to ensure that they reach the destination safely.

The most common breeds for guide dogs are Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Labradors due to their loyalty, high level of intelligence and friendliness. These different characteristics of the aforementioned breeds make them perfect for the job. However, cross-breeds are also breaking into the market for guide dogs. The Labradoodle for example, is also accepted in the service due to its gentle but energetic temperament and its minimal shedding. It is also a good idea to purchase a rolled leather puppy collar.

Most centers and guide dog schools are charity based and non-profit, meaning acquiring the services of one of their trained dogs require no fee. Some centers do charge for their dogs, however most fees are minimal. Signing up for a guide dog has no age limits. Teens and seniors alike have enlisted themselves as successful dog owners all throughout the country.

If you would like to learn more about enlisting for a guide dog or volunteering your pet to the service, please visit your local animal centers and clinics and inquire about the available programs in your area.

Guide dogs help provide a much better life for the visually impaired. The relationship developed between a dog and its owner often starts out in a more “professional” tone, but throughout the course of their journey together blooms a long lasting and meaningful friendship that is both rewarding and irreplaceable.
